Brownsville Houses are located in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and are surrounded by Livonia Avenue, Rockaway Avenue, and Mother Gaston Boulevard. The houses were built in 1948 and consist of 27 buildings and over 3,300 tenants. Brownsville Houses was one of the first NYCHA developments to be built after World War II. It was built in an age of mass excitement about public housing as a way of providing acceptable levels of living to working-class family people. Compared to some of the innovations that followed, Brownsville Houses were built with open parkland and an idea of community planning close to early suburban ideals.

Despite such early designs, Brownsville Houses have suffered across the years, particularly toward the latter part of the 20th century. The adjacent neighborhood of the complex underwent disinvestment, crime, and economic decline that negatively affected residents’ standards of living. Maintenance and decaying infrastructure problems, as in the majority of NYCHA complexes, have been chronic issues of the complex. The Brownsville Houses residents have, however, been proud and resourceful and established strong tenant and community organizations that up to this date struggle for betterment and services.

Brownsville Houses has also served as home to celebrities including former boxer Mike Tyson, who grew up there and blames his wayward childhood on the complex. Activists, artists, and educators who have made the world and society a better place have also been born and raised out of the complex.

Collectively, the Brownsville Houses summarise the history of NYCHA’s existence—characterised by struggle but also by acts of courage, resilience, and community strength. Struggle notwithstanding, though, the Brownsville spirit lives and shines, and it’s a piece of Brooklyn public housing history.
