Built in 1956, the Bay View Houses consists of 23 buildings housing approximately 3,400 residents. The 24-acre compound is located in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn, bordered by Seaview Avenue, East 102nd Street, and Rockaway Parkway.
Unlike most NYCHA developments, which were primarily designed for low-income residents, Bay View Houses were intended for middle-income families. This distinction earned the complex the nickname the “country club of projects.”
Because of its focus on middle-income residents, the development was constructed to a higher standard than typical public housing. Apartments in the Bay View Houses are more spacious and include amenities such as outdoor terraces, balconies, and even an on-site elementary school.
This focus on design and quality has generally made Bay View Houses safer and more comfortable compared to other NYCHA developments.
However, not all residents agreed with this perception. Howard Schultz, the former CEO of Starbucks who grew up in the complex, described it as a “poor” and “rough place.” It has also been home to other notable figures, including Steven Keats, an actor, and Ruth Williams, an actor and playwright whose productions were staged at the Bayview Opera House.
Former residents have made meaningful contributions to both the local community and broader society. Their residents take pride in their community, which continues to offer a strong environment for families to grow.
Overall, Bay View Houses remain among the safer and better-maintained NYCHA developments.
