One of the most well-known jazz organists of all time, Dr. Lonnie Smith, remarked, “You’ve been here before!” after seeing a video of Leonieke playing the piano. He sent her a Hammond organ as a gift after learning about her passion in organs. She was only ten years old. By the time she was eleven, she had won an International Women in Jazz award, performed an hour-long feature on radio station WBGO, and been recorded by renowned engineer Rudy Van Gelder and drummer Jimmy Cobb of Miles Davis. Leonieke went on to win a second International Women in Jazz award, the New Jersey Governor’s award, and her most prestigious honor to date—the Hot House Fan Decision Award for “Best Up and Coming Young Artist”—in the years that followed. She also started giving music lectures and giving TEDx talks.
