NEA National Heritage Fellow Hill Country Boogie King Como Blues legend R.L. Boyce’s music is honored at the NYC Mississippi Juke Joint Party. Presented by Gotham Blues Society NYC and FANCY! With a Hill Country Blues workshop, Pop-Up Exhibit, and Juke Joint Jam, BIG BLUES MANE Extravaganza honors the music and life of North Mississippi Blues Legend R.L. Boyce. An immersive Black pleasure experience that is mesmerizing and all-inclusive.Free pop-up exhibit from 5 to 7 p.m. Let’s Boogie: Images of R.L. Boyce’s Life Amy Verdon, a Brooklyn, New York artist who represented Mr. Boyce for the latter seven years of his life and was a personal friend of R.L. for ten years, developed a spectacular multi-projector video collage presentation of R.L.’s extraordinary life. produced the R.L. BOYCE PICNIC from 2018 to 2023, released two CDs, one BOOGIE with RL BOYCE Live, received a BMAward nomination, and proposed R.L. BOYCE for the NEA National Heritage Fellowship. She is the event’s host. Amy is adorable!JUKE JOINT JAM for the Big Blues MANE is free from 7 to 11 p.m.
Juke Joints were typical areas in the Black community where people congregated to have fun. A location where people may let go of their worries, enjoy healing music in a welcoming environment with delicious food and corn liquor, and rejuvenate themselves.
R.L. was renowned for letting anyone participate. The musician’s jam is encouraged by his spontaneous, straightforward, repeated style. Harmony Love Bartz, Dave Dawson, Tucky Parkis, Ms. Slide Guitar, Wendy Jean Garrison, and others are among the special guests.
