SUMMARY:Build-a-Berm at the Wyckoff Urban Farm
DESCRIPTION:Come along to construct a stunning berm on our historic site. Join the staff of Wyckoff House Museum Farm\, the MYA Group\, and Samuel’s Food Gardens on August 29 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm as we construct a lovely berm around the edge of our land. An essential component of permaculture design is a berm\, which is made by stacking organic materials like wood\, compost\, leaves\, and mycelium to build a mound that matches the park’s natural contours. Berms have several ecological advantages in addition to being a beautiful design feature. In addition to improving soil quality\, slowing stormwater runoff\, and retaining water\, berms also give natural plants and animals a place to live. IMPORTANT INFORMATION:Families (aged 10 and up) are welcome to attend. Families and individuals with children 10 years of age and older are welcome\, but they must be accompanied by an adult the entire time. Get ready for the mess! To protect your feet\, wear close-toed shoes and clothing that you don’t mind getting messy in. Arrive Ready: We will supply all the equipment and safety gear you need for your projects\, but it’s always a good idea to bring a hat\, long sleeves\, sunscreen\, and bug repellent. Facilities: On-site restrooms and a water fountain are available. We advise packing a reusable water bottle and some snacks. Weather: Rain or shine on Build-a-Berm day. We will update this site and notify people on the RSVP list to cancel if severe weather is anticipated.

SUMMARY:South Slope Derby
DESCRIPTION:The 19th annual South Slope Derby\, a celebration of inventiveness and originality\, is presented by KoKo NYC! The Annual South Slope Derby has delighted Brooklyn every August for 19 years running\, growing into a cherished celebration of ingenuity and creativity. The Derby\, which involves gravity-powered soap box vehicles constructed by children in the KoKo NYC workshops using recycled materials\, is the finale of the organization’s summer programming. As they design and build their sustainable cars over the course of a week-long workshop\, children express their innate inventiveness and hone their engineering and construction skills. Children learn how to create the car’s functioning components\, such the brakes and steering\, as well as debug and test them alongside our Teaching Artists and Counselors. Kids let their imaginations run wild throughout the construction—who’s to say an automobile can’t also be a dragon? \nAs they drive along 17th Street in South Slope\, Brooklyn\, the children test their creations in the South Slope Derby. Every year\, more than 500 friends\, relatives\, and supporters travel from all around the city to support them. More than 100 children’s automobiles are judged on their creativity\, design\, engineering\, and speed by our team of distinguished judges\, which consists of elected officials\, business entrepreneurs\, community leaders\, and artists. The New York Times\, Brooklyn Magazine\, Brooklyn Paper\, and other publications have reported on this event. The whole family may enjoy raffles\, food vendors\, and entertaining activities in addition to the vehicles! Please note: There will be filming and photography taking place at the South Slope Derby.
