AFA Book fair by American Federation of Arts Tue Jul 14 6PM-8PM

July 14 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
  • « Heritage New York
  • Black Mental Health & Healing Justice Crisis Support Training »

This event, which takes place on July 14, honors the ability of scholarship and publication to enhance the art experience and create space. This is the AFA second annual book fair. There will be light refreshments while connecting with art and book enthusiasts. This is a free event RSVP with the link down below but space is limited.

This year, AFA invites you to join them for a special celebration of Willie Birch: Stories to Tell, the newly published volume accompanying the landmark touring exhibition co-organized by the American Federation of Arts and the New Orleans Museum of Art.

Named after the exhibition, Willie Birch: Stories to Tell marks the first publication dedicated to the first-ever career retrospective of renowned artist and cultural provocateur Willie Birch. Richly illustrated and featuring original scholarship, the book explores Birch’s remarkable six-decade career, highlighting his unique vision of Black American life and the interconnected nature of global art forms.

To celebrate the book’s release, Russell Lord, Chief of Curatorial Affairs at the Norman Rockwell Museum and editor of Willie Birch: Stories to Tell, will join Jon Key, the publication’s designer, for a conversation about bringing the volume to life. Together, they will discuss the collaborative process behind creating the exhibition catalogue, reflect on Willie Birch’s extraordinary six-decade career, and consider the vital role publications play in extending the life and impact of an exhibition.

Willie Birch: Stories to Tell will be available for purchase, alongside dozens of discounted AFA publications, including Xican-a.o.x. Body, Monuments and Myths: The America of Sculptors Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Daniel Chester French, and Mark Dion and Alexis Rockman: Journey to Nature’s Underworld.
